Flower Of The Month:
The September birth flowers are the aster and the morning glory.
Asters (pictured above) are symbols of powerful love. Perhaps because of their positive symbolism, according to folklore they were once burned to ward off serpents.
Morning Glories (pictured above) are simple symbols of affection.

Members Turn Out for CalFlowers 2018 Annual Meeting
On September 11, 2018, 51 members and a few guests attended this year's annual meeting held in Palm Springs just ahead of SAF's annual convention.
CEO Michael LoBue presented the state of the association address, highlighting the considerable changes to CalFlowers over the past five years. With membership up 29%, annual revenue up 33%, and growth in organizational reserves up 17%, CalFlowers has become more than an organization that provides transportation discount programs and a convention every other year. It’s now an organization that reinvests proceeds from the successful transportation programs into the floral industry.

Banabox is an online startup offering DIY Japanese-style floral arranging kits delivered to customers each month. The company’s mission is to share the beauty and elegance of Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arranging. The subscription service includes fresh materials, instructions and tools needed to construct a unique ikebana arrangement at home – similar to Blue Apron’s model, but with fresh flowers. Founder Erin Schwarz (pictured right) practiced ikebana for many years as a hobby, a tradition passed on from generation to generation in her native Hawaii. She initially started on a more traditional career track as an investment banker, but soon realized she wanted to pursue a different path. "In 2017, I decided to make a major life change and pursue my passion. I quit my job in New York and moved to Japan for a year to study ikebana full-time," explains Schwarz. "It was during my time in Japan that I realized this beautiful ancient practice should be shared with people who might never encounter it." Schwarz designs unique arrangements each month, incorporating seasonal cut flowers, greens, and branches while emphasizing different ikebana theories and techniques. "Our early customers have really enjoyed the opportunity to take 30 minutes out of their hectic schedules to interact with natural materials in a creative and peaceful setting, and learn a new skill," says Schwarz.
Banabox launched this fall, and serves customers across the continental US. Click Here to learn more about Banabox.
