Memorial Day Flowers Initiative Expands

Once again, CalFlowers was a platinum sponsor for this year’s Memorial Day Flowers initiative, supporting an expanding effort to honor the sacrifices made by America’s military men and women.

The initiative began in 2011, after U.S. citizens working in the flower industry formed the Memorial Day Flowers Foundation, (MDFF).  That year, the Foundation placed 10,000 roses at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day.

This year, the Foundation organized the headstone placement of 210,000 flowers at Arlington and 250,000 stems at 41 other U.S. cemeteries. In addition, 130 retailers gave roses to their communities to honor those who have served.

CalFlowers was also the event organizer at the San Francisco and Miramar National Cemeteries this year.

USDA to release 2018 Floriculture Crops Report

After a two-year hiatus due to budget constraints, the USDA will again be publishing the annual Floriculture Crops report, first published in 1979 . Recognized by the floriculture industry as the only source of its kind for annual data on all floral crops, the report is invaluable for understanding the trends in domestic floral production.

CalFlowers, with other national floral associations, lobbied Congress to resume this important publication with personal visits to California’s members of Congress and a letter-writing campaign following SAF’s sponsored Congressional Action Days in March.

“There’s no substitute for hard data about floral production in the U.S. – hard data allows us to identify real problems, trends and opportunities,” says Michael LoBue, CalFlowers CEO.  “We’re thrilled that the Floriculture Crops report will resume.”

CalFlowers Membership Dues Grace Period Almost Over

The grace period for paying your 2018 membership dues is almost over.  Make payment by July 1 to retain your membership. Otherwise, your membership and benefits, including discounted transportation rates from FedEx, GSO, and OnTrac, will be cancelled.

A $100 reinstatement fee, in addition to your annual dues payment, will be required to reactivate your membership in the Association if not paid by July 1.

Look for your membership renewal email that provides you with a convenient link at the bottom of the email with instructions on how to pay your dues invoice using your credit card. DO NOT LOG INTO THE CALFLOWERS WEBSITE TO PAY YOUR INVOICE - YOU MUST USE THE LINK AT THE BOTTOM OF THE EMAIL THAT WAS SENT TO YOU.

If you have not received your dues renewal email or have any questions or concerns, please contact Linda Long, CalFlowers Membership Manager, at (831) 479-4912 or via email at [email protected]

Transportation

As a reminder, new shipping rates and program information for 2018 can be found on the CalFlowers website.  Rates for FedEx, GSO and OnTrac are also included.  Members can use their log-ins to access this information anytime. For questions or comments about any of our programs, please contact Chris Johnson for assistance – [email protected] or by phone (760) 533-5580.

FedEx® has available, at no charge, high visibility perishable stickers that members can place on boxes that are designed to help FedEx® personnel identify perishable shipments.  These are NOT mandatory but are recommended as FedEx® has found them to be helpful.  These high visibility colored stickers should be placed adjacent to the shipping label and only 1 sticker per box is needed. To order these colored stickers visit www.fedex.com or call FedEx® at 1-800-GO FEDEX.

Also, FedEx® is in the process of a major corporate rebranding. The familiar colors on the logos and trucks that differentiate the different divisions at FedEx® will eventually be just purple and orange once again.  This is important for members who have pick-ups from both Ground and Express as it will be necessary to keep the trucks separate.  For more information, please visit www.fedex.com

For CalFlower members sending BOXES or parcels UNDER 3 lbs, GSO now allows these boxes to be shipped under their lowest weight break previously reserved only for letters and small packs.  Starting immediately, members can now use a BOX and still get the super low 0-3 lb. rate.  For more information or questions, please contact me anytime, [email protected] and 760-533-5580.

GSO has a nice handy tool on its website that shows shippers which states of their service area are overnight or 2 day.  Click here for GSO’s “Time and Transit Map” https://www.gso.com/shipping/transitmaps

OnTrac also has a very nice “Time and Transit Map” under Zip Tools on their website.  This handy map loaded from YOUR zip code really helps understand OnTrac’ overnight commitment areas.  To download your map please visit https://www.ontrac.com/servicesareas.asp
