Women's Day • March 8, 2018

Women’s Day, observed annually on March 8, is a day to celebrate the achievements of women from around the world. More than 100 nations recognize Women’s Day, and 35 have declared it a national holiday, with thousands of events held by organizations, governments, charities, educational institutions, women’s groups, corporations, and the media.  Every woman deserves Love, Honor, and Respect. Whether mother or daughter, young or old, amazing women deserve to be honored this day and every day.

The team at CalFlowers and Asocolflores is already hard at work spreading the news for Women’s Day 2018. To learn more about Women’s Day or to access free social media marketing tools, visit https://womensdayholiday.com/

Let's Stop Weaponizing Flowers for Political Reasons

It seems to happen around every flower holiday – flowers are weaponized by protectionists and they drag out the Andean Trade Preference Act (ATPA) as the reason domestic flower growers have been harmed over the past quarter century.  While this narrative is comforting to some, it’s not the complete story.  It’s not even the accurate story.  I suppose it’s a comforting narrative because it places the blame beyond our shores.

Save The Date: 2018 Member Meeting

Meet old friends, make new friends, and join the discussion about the California floral industry at our next CalFlowers Member Meeting, to be held in conjunction with SAF this year in Palm Springs, CA on Tuesday, September 11. (Unlike past years, there will be only one meeting, rather than 3 regional meetings.)

CalFlowers strives to create opportunities for open dialogue among members and to help your businesses thrive.  Attend to learn about CalFlowers plans for the 2018-19 year and to visit our vendors during the Vendor Reception.

More information will be released in the coming months.

If you have questions, please contact Monnaie Pepin @ [email protected] or by calling 970-460-9764.

  Memorial Day Flowers 2018

CalFlowers will once again sponsor this important event that pays tribute to America's veterans who have sacrificed so much, along with the sacrifices their families have made over many generations.

Along with TD Bank and Asocolflores, CalFlowers is a Platinum Sponsor at Arlington National Cemetery.  At the Welcome Center, 25,000 visitors will receive a Californian focal flower to place at the gravesite of a loved one. Holland America Flowers is also donating 700 bouquets for the T.A.P.S. children.

CalFlowers is the event organizer at Miramar and San Francisco National Cemeteries. At SFNC, Mt. Eden is supplying logistic support, and Recology has sponsored the placement of 26,404 flowers - every headstone at SFNC!  Recology has invited employees from LinkedIn and Facebook to help place flowers and welcomes all those wishing to pay tribute on Memorial Day.

At Miramar, Mike Mooney and Chris Johnson will make sure all 12,000+ headstones will be honored with flowers.

CalFlowers' sponsorship will also support the following cemeteries, providing a total of 14,000 focal flowers:

  • Ft. Snelling National Cemetery (Minnesota)
  • Houston National Cemetery
  • Sacramento Valley National Cemetery
  • Greenwood Cemetery (Florida)
  • National Memorial Cemetery (Arizona)

Flourish Flower Farm

Flourish Flower Farm grows specialty cut flowers using sustainable, natural practices in the mountains outside of Asheville, NC. They are dedicated to growing only specialty and heirloom varieties.  Producing high quality, organic, fragrant blooms is their priority. By focusing on intensive planting, soil fertility, plant health and succession planting, they grow an impressive number of flowers on just two acres. Flourish Flower Farm also has a boutique floral design studio and creates lush, seasonally-inspired floral designs in their naturally wild signature style for weddings and special events.

In addition to offering in-house floral design, Flourish Flower Farm also provides flowers to florists and designers locally and now ship their blooms to designers across the country. They host on-farm design workshops, farm tours, and private sessions throughout the growing season. Flourish Flower Farm is owned and loved by Niki and William Irving. They believe that flowers make the world a more beautiful, enjoyable place and are inspired by the way a fresh bouquet of flowers can light up someone's entire face. Flourish Flower Farm is truly their labor of love!

Transportation

As a reminder, new 2018 shipping rates and program information are availble in the Members Only area of the CalFlowers website.  Members can access rates for FedEx, GSO and OnTrac at anyt time using their log-ins.  For questions or comments on any of our programs, please contact Chris Johnson for assistance – [email protected] or by phone (760) 533-5580.

FedEx:

Did you know that FedEx has a free service that will evaluate your packaging as well as make recommendations on how to improve it?  Now you can learn the secrets of cost-conscious packaging from the pros.  With packaging resources from FedEx, successful shipping is just a phone call away at 800-633-7019 or [email protected].

GSO:

Want to know how quickly GSO can deliver your package?  Just visit the GSO website for a handy tool that will show a time-in-transit map.  Visit www.gso.com/shipping/transitmaps for more details.

Just a reminder that GSO does offer 3rd Party Billing. It just needs to be set up in advance with GSO. There are a couple of ways to do it, so we would recommend shippers contact GSO directly and let them know you want to set-up a remote (3rd party) shipper.  They can take it from there and explain how it can work.  If you have any questions, please contact Chris Johnson directly at [email protected].

OnTrac:

OnTrac has improved their tracking system to give shippers more up-to-date information and visibility.  To learn more about these improvements, visit www.ontrac.com/servicesTracking.asp for all the details.

NOTE: Transportation Rate information and documents are viewable/downloadable (as PDFs) on the CalFlowers Members Only site.
