CalFlowers News

Our goal is to communicate on a monthly basis with the membership and interested parties about recent past and upcoming events, program updates, and general information about how CalFlowers is engaging in the indusry on behalf of the membership.

Updated & Refreshed Website

We are happy to report that CalFlowers staff completed the transition to an entirely new website and membership management system – the site went live just before Mother's Day.  We're still rolling in some of the new functionality, but it's already a great deal more functionality than the previous version.  Please tell us what you think:  www.cafgs.org

Fun 'N Sun 2015

Don’t miss Fun ‘N Sun this year:  July 29 – August 1, 2015 in historic Monterey, California.  With four days devoted to California flowers and the floral industry, it is the largest all-California floral display and floral exhibit available in one location.

Visit some of California’s leading flower farms, make new friends, meet old friends, and learn about emerging trends in the industry.

If you haven't registered yet, please do so right away.  For more details about the event and to download the registration form, click here.

World Floral Expo Hits New High

CalFlowers’ efforts to bring World Floral Expo to the flower capital of the United States was a big success.

More than 850 registered attendees visited more than 80 exhibit spaces, roughly twice the attendance over last year's event in Chicago. CalFlowers had its own pavilion with: Dramm and Echter; FBI Flowers/Sun Vista Farms; Florabundance, Inc.; Holland America; Glad-A-Way, Inc.; Kendall Farms, Kitayama Brothers, Inc.; Komet Sales; K’s Transport; San Diego County Flower & Plant Association; Southwest Airlines Cargo; The Sun Valley Group; Transflora; Tutuli Flower Farms; Twins Flower Growers & Shippers; Valley Springs; and WAFEX USA exhibiting.

2015-16 Membership Renewal

Due to the website transition and the heavy Mother's Day holiday, membership renewal notices were not sent until May 8 to primary contacts at member companies.  As such, for Floral Members – the only membership class to receive an early-bird discount – the deadline to renew and receive the discount has been moved out to July 1.  For all members, it is critical to renew no later than July 1 to avoid any interruption of your important membership benefits.

Memorial Day Flowers

CalFlowers wishes to thank Memorial Day Flowers Foundation for inviting us to participate in this important and moving recognition of the sacrifices the men and women of the American armed forces and their families have made over many generations.  CalFlowers joined about two dozen other organizations and floral industry companies to pay tribute to our fallen soldiers and their families over this past Memorial Day weekend at Arlington National Cemetery.

MDF

Our CEO, Michael LoBue, was present over the holiday weekend, unloading, distributing, and placing approximately 120,000 flowers on gravesites – along with other sponsors and local Boy Scout and Cub Scout troops.  In LoBue's own words:  "Flowers were an important medium for this special occasion where words are simply inadequate to convey the range of emotions that flow when meeting family members who've lost a loved one to military service.  Handing them a fistful of flowers was special for them – and for me."

LoBue posted photos from the weekend on CalFlowers' Instagram account and wrote several blog posts during the weekend.  A special thanks goes to CalFlowers member Ocean View Flowers for donating 500 bouquets to the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors members who placed the bouquets of stock and larkspur on the graves of their loved ones.

Transportation Updates

FedEx News — We are pleased to report that we have negotiated another 2 year extension on our contract for our 250 Dimensional Factor (DIM).  This is an important contract win for our shipping members.  Our FedEx 250 DIM on Express looks outstanding compared to the industry standard DIM factor of 166.  This cost-saving benefit is a critical part of our program’s overall excellence, and we are pleased to continue to offer it through our FedEx partner.

In airline news, we have new rates on Delta Cargo.  These new rates are unique in the fact that they are rated to include the fuel and security surcharges.  These new “all-in rates” are easier to calculate and make landed costs simpler.  If you need a copy of our new Delta rates or have any questions, please contact Chris Johnson at [email protected] for assistance.
