August:
Flowers Of The Month

Gladiolus and Poppy

The gladiolus, or ‘sword lily,’ represents remembrance, calm, integrity, and infatuation.

Gladiolus indicates that the heart is being “pierced with love.”

The other August flower is the poppy:

  • A red poppy signifies pleasure;
  • A white poppy is given for consolation; and,
  • A yellow poppy wishes wealth and success.

Fun 'N Sun 2019 - a Success

This year’s Fun ‘N Sun event was held in Santa Barbara, CA at the Hilton Santa Barbara Beachfront Resort.

Williee Armellini of FlowersandCents.com referred to it as more of an intimate affair than the typical, and larger, floral industry trade show.  Dr. Terril Nell, one of our presenters on Friday morning, said:  “I really enjoyed it; the schedule left plenty of time to get into deeper conversations with people than is the norm for our industry.”

Madeline’s Flowers is a third generation florist serving Edmond, Oklahoma for 69 years.  The shop was started in 1950 by Madeline Graham.  It is now owned by her daughter Barbara and granddaughters, Lenzee and Lacee.

The mother-daughter team all graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma and have backgrounds in business and design.  They love the fact that the floral industry is ever-changing, and new flowers and products are available.

Pictured from left to right: Lenzee Bilke, Barbara Bilke, and Lacee Bilke.  Lenzee and Lacee are very active in the floral industry.  They value education and serve on the Oklahoma State Florist Association and the Oklahoma Teleflora Unit.  Lenzee and Lacee are currently teaching floral design at Oklahoma State University OKC.

This November, they will be hosting their 70th Anniversary with an appreciation to all of their customers.  They are planning to thank all of their loyal customers for the years they have been able to serve them.

The mother-daughter team enjoys working together and feels that they can utilize each other's strengths to make the business better.  You could say the threesome has a passion for flowers.

Red Twig Farms is located on six acres in New Albany, Ohio. They specialize and are known for their peonies. In 2019 Red Twig harvested around 40,000 stems. In the fall, they harvest dogwood, willow, and winterberry branches. Red Twig is the first and currently only farm in Ohio to be Certified American Grown Flowers.

Each Memorial Day weekend, customers from many states flock to their farm for the Peony Season Opener where they kick off peony season and the store opening. In the 2019 season, they had more than 7,000 people visit the farm store in two days. That head count grew from 2018 when 2,000 people attended.

Every fall, Red Twig opens the farm back up for dogwood, willow, and winterberry branches along with holiday wreath workshops and more. This fall they will be hosting more than 150 people for the American Grown Field to Vase Dinner Tour.

Transportation

As a reminder, current shipping rates and program information is up on the CalFlowers website.  Members using their log-ins can access this information anytime.  Rates on FedEx, GSO|GLS, OnTrac and airlines can all be found as well as other handy information. For questions or comments on any of our programs, please contact Chris Johnson for assistance (760) 533-5580 or [email protected].

  • Recently FedEx, in keeping with the latest integration, made an upgrade and switched to a new computer system handling many customer contracts.  As some members may have noticed, FedEx found a glitch in their system when it came to our Money Back Guarantee (MBG).  For a short period, members might have received a message saying FedEx would not honor the MBG.  This glitch has been fixed and should not affect any shipment with an invoice date later than August 2.  If you have a question, comment, or issue with any shipment regarding the MBG, please call Chris Johnson for assistance (760) 533-5580.  And keep in mind that new guidelines have been issued by FedEx regarding the MBG.  Beginning immediately, shippers requesting a MBG on a shipment must make the request no longer than 15 days from the invoice date.  Requests after the 15 day time period will not be honored.
  • We also want to remind members that FedEx Ground continues to be an excellent value, especially “one day Ground”.  Using FedEx ground for shipments that can be delivered overnight can really make a lot of sense. For more information on your CalFlowers Ground program, please contact Chris at [email protected].

  • Additionally, for members shipping into and out of Alaska, here is a handy Zone Locator for the state.  It helps to understand the zones and pricing.  Click HERE for your Alaska Zone Locator.

We would also like to remind members to stay current with their FedEx Express shipping invoices. FedEx’s payment terms are 15 days.  All members shipping on FedEx Express are expected to stay within the FedEx payment terms.  To obtain your invoice details and payment options, please contact FedEx Customer Service. For members who wish to move PALLETIZED freight on FedEx, CalFlowers can help direct you to customized solutions and pricing.  FedEx Freight is an excellent option when your shipments call for pallets. Interested members should contact Chris Johnson at [email protected] for more information.

GSO is now a part of the GLS Group.  GSO is proud to be a part of the GLS Group. The company is excited to combine their decades of experience with GLS's expertise as a top-rated European parcel delivery provider. Over the last year, GSO has become known as GSO | a GLS company, and is in the process of gradually transitioning its website, supplies, vehicles, communica-tions, uniforms, and facilities to the GLS brand. And for those of you based in the Northwest, GSO | a GLS company has introduced GLS branded vehicles, facilities, and driver uniforms.  Click Here to learn more about GLS.

For members shipping PALLETS on GSO|GLS, please be advised that there will be a $50 fee for deliveries to RESIDENTIAL areas. GSO|GLS states this fee is due to the fact that these deliveries require special lift gate vehicles.

The CalFlowers GSO|GLS program is one of our most value-priced offerings.  GSO|GLS provides door to door services to CA, AZ, NV, OR, WA NM and ID.  Members who want to ship on GSO|GLS must sign up in advance. It’s easy and just takes a few minutes.  Please contact Chris Johnson for more details (760) 533-5580 or [email protected].

We know that OnTrac got their start in California and service every ZIP code in California , but did you know OnTrac also services eight Western States.  OnTrac has 2 day service into WA, OR, ID, NV, UT, AZ and CO.  And to help understand the service parameters, OnTrac has a very nice “Time and Transit Map” under Zip Tools on their website.  This handy map loaded from YOUR zip code helps you understand OnTrac’s overnight commitment areas.  To download your map, please visit:
https://www.ontrac.com/servicesareas.asp

Airlines:

Check out our updated airline contact website page, a handy reference offering contact information for our California Air Cargo representatives.  Members must be logged into the CalFlowers website to access the list.  Please visit www.cafgs.org.

Delta Air Cargo has made some changes to their Fees and Payment Methods as well as some service level guarantees.
You can find these changes on Delta’s website or you can visit the transportation section at CalFlowers at www.cafgs.org.

If you haven’t yet heard about the new CalFlowers/Alaska Airlines shipping program, this exclusive offer is now available for CalFlowers members.  The new Priority Rates are the best we have seen in years and with the Virgin merger completed, Alaska Airlines has an extensive network servicing major popular destination all across the U.S. To get linked to this exceptional program, interested members must sign up.  Please contact Chris Johnson to get started (760) 533-5580 or [email protected].
