Pagoda House Peonies in a farm located on the outskirts of Fairbanks, Alaska and is run by two sisters. Each growing season they travel to Alaska in the summers with their kids to take care of the farm. Their first peony roots were planted in 2017 and each year they have grown their operation. As a perennial, it takes peony plants several years to mature before you can harvest. Pagoda House Peonies has their first harvest in 2022. Because of the late growing season in Alaska, Alaska peony growers can fill the July/August niche for fresh cut peonies when other regions have already put their beds to rest.

Crespell is a cut flower farm in Upstate New York. They are located ~150 miles from NYC, tucked into the Catskill Mountains which helps to keep their flowers cooler for longer periods of time. The owner, Anne Hall, shared, "We will never be the first to market, but we will always be the last".

Crespell is committed to principles of permaculture andregenerative farming. Anne and team are creating a sustainable farm at every level, from team building and financial success, to the environmental impact they have on their land, community, and flower industry as a whole.

Crespell offers a wide variety of floral options, including u-pick, wholesale, workshops, and events and weddings. Anne and Brent Hilton planted their first peony roots in the fall of 2019. The California Peony Company cultivates 10 acres of popular and specialty peony varieties for cut flower production in the remote mountain town of Callahan, CA. They sell their stems to wholesalers, florists, and directly to customers in the US. Blomgården is an Alaskan peony farm owned by Lynden Grothe.  They are in Trapper Creek, Alaska, which is a small community three hours North of Anchorage.  Lynden is a lifelong Alaskan resident who grew up in a mining (gold and tin) and fishing family on Kodiak Island and Nome, Alaska. 

Blomgården is a woman-owned, family-run, wholesale peony business.  Their farm is located across the street from the Dale Saunders Sandhill Crane Sanctuary.  Imagine being surrounded by 6,000 peony plants while hundreds of sandhill cranes pass overhead on their migration South.  It truly is a charmed life. 

Lynden (pictured left with her 4 children and 2 dogs) decided to go into the flower farming business so that her children could learn about agriculture and business. She has four sons who were also born and raised in Alaska, and Lynden homeschools them.  They are part of a large thriving homeschool community in Alaska and her vision for Blomgården was to have a place where young people could go to get their hands in the dirt and learn how to grow things.  Her family is learning the peony farming business together.  The former farm owners, Bryan, and Marilyn Hoffman are wonderful teachers and Blomgården has successfully completed their first peony season under their tutelage.

Blomgården specializes in five varieties of peony: Duchess de Nemours, Monsieur Jules Elie, Elsa, Sarah Bernhardt and Festivas.  The growing season runs from late June to the end of August.

Jenny Barker (pictured left) opened her first store Magical Blooms, at age 18  with $500 in waitressing tips, and three years later moved to her current location where she continues to run her thriving business today, Magical Blooms, in her hometown of Redondo Beach, California.  During this time her business rapidly expanded, and as her reputation flourished, she became known as the Flower Doctor for her uncanny ability to understand and express the healing powers of flower emotion, known as her Flower Prescription.

Her floral compositions range from small, unique arrangements to providing over 400 artistic bouquets for large gatherings and floral designer for well-known television shows.  Magical Blooms suppliestelevision and movie productions, luxury hotels, and rock stars with perfect arrangements.  She sources globally, from Thailand’s Vanda Orchids to brilliantly colored roses from Ecuador as well as rare tulips from the Netherlands.

But destiny would move her from florist to celebrity.

In 2003 she was recruited to star in a series on TLC called “For Better or Worse”, an early reality show highlighting the tensions of wedding planning.  Jenny, of course, provided the floral arrangements.  Twenty-three episodes which ran through 2005, securing her place as a smart, high energy media celebrity.  This was followed by appearances on other programs such as “Merge”, “Live Like a Star”, and “The Arrangement”. Whistle Stop Peonies

It began in 2017, when, Mona Tague, owner of Whistle Stop Peonies, turned her love for flowers into a business in the pursuit of sharing the true and pure beauty of the peony flower. While the flowers alone bring her immense joy, she receives insurmountable joy when they are shared. Mona is the mother of four daughters and the grandmother of two little girls. All of whom bring her great pride and jubilation. She grew up in Gorin, Missouri where the whistle of the train can be heard for miles and where its presence brings a sense of community and nostalgia. 

The name for Whistle Stop Peonies struck Mona when she was in the garden pulling weeds and overheard the train bustling through. It then took on the name, where the whistle and the garden, both symbols of home for her would come together as one and bloom into so much more. It’s all about community and connection and she is devoted to helping individuals, florists, event planners and many more find the flowers they are in search for and desire. Mona’s retirement plan is under way and the next 3 to 4 years will fly when you love what you are doing. The bare roots are sold in the Fall, and the flowers are ready to bloom in the Spring.

Dan and Denise Carey are retired teachers, who after 30 years in the classroom, decided to start a second career as peony farmers. They cleared 2 acres of forestland in 2017 and planted their roots in 2018. They opted for a small farm (3,000 plants), so they could manage it themselves with very little outside help. Building their farm from the ground up was one of the hardest, yet most rewarding projects they have undertaken.

Funny River Peonies, is located in the tiny community of Funny River, Alaska, just outside of Soldotna, Alaska. Because of their northern location, their plants receive an average of 19 hours of daylight per day during the summer. This allows Alaska peonies to grow bigger and brighter than peonies in many other locations. Their farm boasts fourteen varieties of peonies in a wide range of colors. They are available from mid-July to mid-August, after most peonies in the lower 48 states are finished blooming.

Cal Coast Orchids was founded in 2019 by husband-and-wife duo Alison Glasco and Bas van Eijk.  Born and raised in the Netherlands, head grower Bas descends from a long ancestral line of farmers and horticulturalists. Pursuing his passion, Bas has traveled the world growing orchids, ultimately settling down in Los Osos.  Before co-founding Cal Coast Orchids with her husband, Los Angeles-native Alison earned a B.S. in Engineering Physics from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, during which she met Bas and stepped foot in a greenhouse for the first time.  After finding a love for horticulture, she now gets to channel her passion for efficiency and excellent customer service into her own company, as she handles operations and sales for the business.

Fox Hollow Peonies is owned and operated by Milt and Wanda Haken.  Milt is a retired Law Enforcement officer and Wanda is a retired School Counselor.  Their farm is in Nenana, Alaska, which is halfway between Denali Park and Fairbanks.  They grow 14 different varieties of peonies which are available late June thru mid-September.  Fox Hollow Peonies ships all over the U.S!

Fox Hollow Peonies came about as the result of a near tragedy!  
In 2006 their home was almost consumed by a huge forest fire that started down the highway south of us during a very dry summer.  With the help of the Wildland Fire fighters, they saved their home, but the woods surrounding them was burned.  After clearing the burned woods, and using it for firewood for several years, they found that they had a large, open field in need of a mission!  In 2010 Wanda (pictured right) attended an agriculture class for teachers and was introduced to the newest Ag opportunity in Alaska – growing peonies! Both of them come from generations of farmers in the Midwest so this seemed to strike a chord with them.  Wanda came home and told her husband, “I know what we are planting in that cleared field!”  Their empty field now had a mission!  They planted their first 250 peony roots that fall.  They named their farm “Fox Hollow” because they have a family of foxes that have lived in a den beside their field since they planted their first roots!  The burned trees have now been replaced by 5,000 beautiful peony plants!

Crystal and Rae (pictured left) are two southern gals who run separate wedding planning and floral design businesses and love giving people beautiful experiences.  As entrepreneurs, they have a lot in common which kicked off their friendship over 5 years ago.  Flowers make them happy. Really happy. And sharing that with others thrills them to our core. Crystal and Rae believe nature can nurture your soul and flower stains with dirty fingernails tells of a good day.

So, why add another business to both of their busy lineups?  The answer is pretty simple:  they love sharing their knowledge and encouraging others to create.  With almost 20 years of combined experience, their passion for educating others on florals and design makes their hearts burst with excitement.  

They just launched our first Basics To Blooms Box in May!  This subscription-based service takes the flower party directly to our customers’ homes!  Each month they prepare a box of fresh blooms and supplies and deliver them to our “Bloomers”.  With their membership, they are part of a private group where they show them step by step how to arrange the flowers in that month’s box.  Crystal and Rae are loving every minute of it and of course, have a few more ideas up their “flower aprons”!

Blue Sky Flower Farm started over a decade ago with just a few peonies in their city lot. Rachael and her husband Jon had been dreaming of Blue Sky Flower Farm for as long as they could remember. They both have horticulture degrees and have worked in the industry for over 30 years combined. While still working full time, along with raising their children (and chickens), they started to grow the farm by adding woody cuts (specialty willows and dogwoods) on a small scale in a pasture at Jon’s family’s Brown Swiss dairy farm.

In 2014, they were able to purchase their own 10-acre farm 30 miles from Minneapolis – St. Paul and currently have 2 acres in cut flower production. Growing unique woody cuts and perennial cut flowers not commonly found on the market have been their niche. They also grow many different annual species, tulips, dahlias and ornamental fall items.

Jon and Rachael (pictured right) grow sustainably and thoughtfully and truly enjoy the creativity and beauty in farming. Their farm specializes in mixed bouquets for their Flower Bouquet Share (based on the CSA model) and they also provide mixed bouquets to occasional shops, retail stores and groceries. Locally they sell our blooms at the Twin Cities Flower Exchange (a local wholesale flower hub) and direct to designers. Blue Sky Flower Farm ships nationally to garden centers, landscape design firms, floral designers and public gardens. While this dream has turned into an immense amount of work and long hours farming, they are so grateful for this opportunity.

Radebaugh Florist & Greenhouses is located in Towson, Maryland, just north of Baltimore.  They operate not only as a florist but a full scale garden center as well.  The Radebaugh family has owned and operated the business since its inception, and 2019 marks the 95^th anniversary of the company.

Madeline’s Flowers is a third generation florist serving Edmond, Oklahoma for 69 years.  The shop was started in 1950 by Madeline Graham.  It is now owned by her daughter Barbara and granddaughters, Lenzee and Lacee.

The mother-daughter team all graduated from the University of Central Oklahoma and have backgrounds in business and design.  They love the fact that the floral industry is ever-changing, and new flowers and products are available.

Red Twig Farms is located on six acres in New Albany, Ohio. They specialize and are known for their peonies. In 2019 Red Twig harvested around 40,000 stems. In the fall, they harvest dogwood, willow, and winterberry branches. Red Twig is the first and currently only farm in Ohio to be Certified American Grown Flowers.

Each Memorial Day weekend, customers from many states flock to their farm for the Peony Season Opener where they kick off peony season and the store opening. In the 2019 season, they had more than 7,000 people visit the farm store in two days. That head count grew from 2018 when 2,000 people attended. 

Every fall, Red Twig opens the farm back up for dogwood, willow, and winterberry branches along with holiday wreath workshops and more. This fall they will be hosting more than 150 people for the American Grown Field to Vase Dinner Tour.

Denali Peonies started their farm after their son, Brandon, approached them about how Alaska was beginning to be a growing industry for peony cut flowers.  Brandon was attending the University of Alaska at the time, and some of his friends were doing their thesis on the "new and upcoming agricultural industry" for the state of Alaska.  He suggested that they should grow peonies, since they had 5 acres of land that their house was on.  They only wanted to grow 100 plants, but their son said to "go big or go home!" So, in 2012, they broke ground, and planted their first 1000 plants in their back yard!  They decided to try 5 different varieties to see how they would take to the Alaskan winters.  Much to their surprise, they all did well!  They were very excited and decided to expand.  In 2013, they purchased another 5 acres next to their property, and prepared the land by clearing trees, hand drilling all the holes for each plant, and adding soil.  In 2014 and 2016 they planted an additional 1000 plants to give them a total of 3000 peony plants. They now have 9 varieties of peonies.  In 2018, they wanted to try some coral peonies, so they only planted 50 since they are difficult to grow in Alaska. 

Denali Peonies currently has no well or water source on their additional 5 acres, so they decided to put up a large pool.  They keep it full during the summer months by hauling water to fill it.  This is not unusual for Alaska, as many people will haul their water for their homes.  They use the pool to water their plants by sprinkler pumps to pump the water to their irrigation lines. Their grandkids love the pool and will often come over to swim when the weather is warm.  Their peonies do well during the Alaskan summer, especially with the 24 hours of daylight. 

They will be picking the peonies soon, mid-June to the end of July.  Steve and Dawn are out picking 3-4 times each day during this four-week period.   They are hoping to pick 8000 stems of whites, pinks and reds.  Denali Peonies flowers are large in size and range from 5-8inches in diameter!  

They are very busy starting in April, after the snow melts, to when the snow finally returns in October.  In addition to their peony farm, they both have full-time jobs.  Dawn is an ICU nurse at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital and Steve has a business, Rosie Creek Enterprises/Sharpening where he does carpentry, tile work and sharpening blades, saws and scissors.
